The Heart Behind Bright City

In 2017, Ike and Sharon Miller began to envision a new church in South Durham. It would be a church that was thoughtful about faith and passionate about Jesus.

In a region shaped by universities, research, and big ideas, they saw a need for a community where people could bring their hardest questions while growing in their relationship with God. They dreamed of a church that would embrace the whole message of Jesus: restoring our relationship with God, with one another, and with ourselves.

That vision became Bright City Church, which launched in 2018 at the Southpoint AMC Theatre.

Our name reflects both a calling and a hope. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus calls his followers the “light of the world.” In Revelation 21, the New Jerusalem shines with the glory of God. Together, these images shape the kind of church we hope to be: a community that reflects the light of Jesus and offers a taste of the diversity, peace, and presence of God’s Kingdom.
